2022 was a pretty successful year in terms of the resurgence of cinema in a post-lockdown world. Whether streaming is still your cup of tea or you actually went to a physical cinema, there was an abundance of beautiful art handed to us and with that, deciding who you want to win the 2023 Academy Awards can be mind-rattling. Though some may think there is absolutely no reason to be breaking a sweat over the Academy Awards, this is my fantasy football. My Super Bowl. My *insert annual event that men get irrationally worked up over*.
In my eyes, The Academy are extremely hit or miss. Some years Parasite wins and I restore all faith in whoever is on the board of voters but other years A Quiet Place isn’t even nominated and I am reassured that the voters wouldn’t know what a cinematic masterpiece is if it hit them in the face. However, above all, I acknowledge that art is completely subjective and so here I am sharing my hot take.
Let’s begin by breaking down, what I think to be, the most exceptional category: Best Actor. Like I previously said, 2022 was a year for good film and as a result, some of the greatest performances I have ever seen are battling with my last brain cell on who truly deserves to take home the award for Best Actor. The nominees for this category are; Paul Mescal for Aftersun, Bill Nighy for Living, Collin Farrell for The Banshees of Inisherin, Austin Butler for Elvis and Brendan Fraser for The Whale.
